Luke 3: 7- 9 Broods of Vipers and Godly Axes
So John garnered a crowd with the Good News he was “proclaiming.” And that’s interesting because getting people to repent is not necessarily a crowd-pleasing message. But what’s even more interesting than that is that John was not someone who pandered to the crowd. Watch how he treats the crowd in this study and see if he could hold his job if he were hired by a church today interested in increasing church attendance. instead of saying “We’re so happy you joined us today, he calls them a “brood of vipers.”
I bet he wouldn’t hold his job for long!
In fact, I bet he’d be taken off the payroll fairly quickly, and put on the “do not hire list” by some.
He’d probably never make it to the part where he told the crowds God was “godly axes” to chop off their fruitless lives at the roots and let them grow anew.
His priorities were different from the church today. Have financial concerns caused the church to pander, more than preach? Let’s study together.
